What a lucky little guy Riley is! On Oct 1 2021 he got his new home that comes complete with a new pomeranian/chi mix sister named Lillian. His new mom and dad are pretty cool too! Happy life little guy!
Hi … my name is Riley! I am a special needs boy ... I am deaf.
Read everything in my bio to find out details of you need to know about me. If you think I might be the perfect pup for you, go to www.allamericanmuttrescue.org/forms and complete the adoption application online.
Riley is an absolutely precious pom-chi (Pomeranian/Chihuahua mix) boy. He is special needs – he is DEAF. We do not know for sure, but we believe he was probably born deaf. The ideal home for Riley will be with a family who has experience raising and living with a deaf dog. Or a family ready to commit to all the needs of a deaf dog. A puppy born deaf is a little different from a dog that could once hear but has gone deaf. Below are some links to help you understand the reality of living with a deaf dog.

Approximate age/birthdate: Dec 2 2020
Weight/size: 7 lbs
Housebroken: Working on it. He does well as long as you do your part and take him out often. If left loose, unattended inside, he may get distracted playing and have accidents instead of remembering to ‘ask’ to go outside. He needs your help to be successful. Until he learns how to let you know he needs to go potty, he may continue to have accidents.
Crate trained: YES
Personality: happy, sweet, wiggly, loves to give kisses
Energy level: high, but he is learning to settle himself
Fenced yard required?: YES … a physically fenced yard is required – no underground/electric fences. NO EXCEPTIONS. He is deaf and he cannot hear you if you call him, so it is up to his family to protect him.
Does he/she jump fences? NO
Leash walk with manners: Working on it. He does better when wearing a harness rather than just a collar. A secure harness is a safer choice and also protects his trachea from excessive pressure.
Obedience training: NO … he really needs someone who will commit to work with him to learn hand signals for all levels of communication. And remember – everyone in the home must learn the same hand signals to help Riley be successful! A deaf puppy still needs all the socialization, so finding a trainer in your area who accepts deaf dogs in their classes and taking Riley to class would be a great plan.

Riding in vehicles: RIDES OK
Spayed/neutered: YES
Up-to-date on routine vaccinations: YES
Microchipped: YES
Social with other dogs: He is sure all other dogs are friendly and because he is deaf, he cannot hear another dog warn him off with a growl. It is up to his person to monitor all new introductions carefully for his safety.
Social with cats: Has not been around cats in foster home, but his energy would probably be too much for most cats. Again, he could not hear a cat growl or hiss at him, so it is his person’s responsibility to keep him safe.
Good with children: Riley would probably like older, respectful, calm children, but there is a lot to consider as far as his safety. If there are children in the home, they must be mature enough to understand and take on the extra responsibilities that come with caring for and protecting a deaf dog.
Adoption donation: $175
We are an all-volunteer group, so please be patient and understand that it takes an average of 7-14 days to process the applications including reference checks, follow-up questions and home visits. You can expedite the process by providing accurate email addresses for all your references. Time to make phone calls is limited and we often have multiple applications in process. We make every effort to move through them as quickly as possible.
When your application is approved, we will schedule a home visit/meet-and-greet to see if Riley picks you too.
If it seems that the adoption will be a good match for all, there is an adoption fee, and an adoption contract to be signed.
