Saturday May 14 2022 was the first day of Buster's new life! He was welcomed into his new family and now has a new Mom and Dad and a fur-sister, Fergie, and a fur-brother, Luke! Buster knew the minute that he met his Mom and Dad that he picked them and he was ready to start his new adventure with them! Happy Life Little Buster!
Hi … my name is Buster! Please take a minute to read my entire bio to find out everything you need to know about me.
If you think I might be the perfect pup for you, go to www.allamericanmuttrescue.org/forms and complete the adoption application online.
If you are looking for an absolutely adorable full-speed dynamo, Buster could be your guy. This is not a dog for someone who wants a quiet lap dog. Cairns can be feisty with other dogs, and deadly with small pets and errant rodents. On the other hand, they may be a great choice for families who want a playful, cheerful pet always up for a game of fetch or a brisk walk around the neighborhood. We will be looking for an adopter with terrier experience to help set Buster up for success.
But don’t be fooled by all the cuteness. Cairn Terriers are happy, busy little earthdogs originally bred to fearlessly root out foxes and other small, furred prey in the rocky Scottish countryside. They are, by their genetics, little working dogs, so both mind and body need regular exercise!
Curious and alert, Cairns like having a place where they can explore and dig. Buster lost his first home because he was ‘too much’ for the owner. Terriers, in general, are wonderful, busy, high-energy, willful, happy, pushy pups who will take full advantage of any owner who is not confident and strong. While you may say “Oh he’s is adorable … he will be perfect for our family,” please be sure you are up to the responsibility of raising an adorable Cairn Terrier! He will need you for the next 13-15 years!
From https://www.yourpurebredpuppy.com/reviews/cairnterriers.html, an article on What’s Good and What’s Bad about Cairn Terriers (please read the entire article)
“The Cairn Terrier loves to play and needs his daily walks. But he is adaptable to any home in which he can be a full participant and busybody and where his bold terrier traits are kept under control by a confident owner. Adult Cairn Terriers may be friendly or reserved with strangers, but are always alert and quick to announce guests.
This breed can be scrappy and bossy with other pets, but will co-exist with them more readily than some other terriers.
However, strange animals may be a different story, as the Cairn Terrier was bred to hunt and will chase anything that moves. He is inquisitive, so a leash or fenced yard is essential at all times. Assertive but cheerful, with typical terrier stubbornness, the Cairn Terrier must be shown that you are in charge. But he does respond well to consistent discipline and lots of praise. Cairn Terriers can be possessive of their food and toys. And being respectable terriers, they are enthusiastic diggers and barkers.”
Approximate age/birthdate: August 19, 2021
Weight/size: 15 lbs
Housebroken: Working on it. He does well as long as you take him out often. He does best when kept on a regular schedule.
Crate trained: He will stay in his crate with minimal protest, but if left in there too long, he will potty in the crate.
Personality: busy, curious, loves attention, happy, vocal (will not be a good apartment/condo/townhouse resident)
Energy level: high – he is a terrier puppy – and this is normal
Fenced yard required?: YES and you must check the entire fence regularly – cairn terriers are notorious diggers
Does he/she jump fences? NO
Leash walk with manners: Buster is learning although he still gets excited and will pull when he wants to chase something
Obedience training: Not yet but this should be a priority. He is so smart and needs to have his mind exercised as well as his body. Terriers are wonderful working dogs and they need to have a job to do. Following obedience commands is a great job for them to do every single day. And attending obedience classes with your pup is a great bonding exercise. Buster would probably enjoy agility activities, too, so please consider those classes after obedience! Remember Toto in the Wizard of Oz? He was a Cairn Terrier … so you can see that they are intelligent and trainable pups if you’re willing to put in the work.
Riding in vehicles: RIDES OK
Spayed/neutered: YES
Up-to-date on routine vaccinations: YES
Microchipped: YES
Social with other dogs: YES although he can be a bit pushy. His energy is not always tolerated well by older dogs.
Social with cats: NO CATS – he would take great pleasure in chasing them and we don’t know if he would actually do them harm. (Yet another reason he needs a fenced yard … so you don’t get in trouble with your neighbors when he harasses their cats.)
Good with children: Terriers are not recommended for homes with small children. (They are often protective of food and toys and this can be dangerous with very young children.) Buster will probably be best with respectful, calm children ages 10 and up.
Adoption donation: $300
We are an all-volunteer group, so please be patient and understand that it takes an average of 7-14 days to process the applications including reference checks, follow-up questions and home visits. You can expedite the process by providing accurate email addresses for all your references. Time to make phone calls is limited and we often have multiple applications in process. We make every effort to move through them as quickly as possible.
When your application is approved, we will schedule a home visit/meet-and-greet to see if Buster picks you too.
If it seems that the adoption will be a good match for all, there is an adoption fee, and an adoption contract to be signed.
Please feel free to email weluvpups@hotmail.com if you have additional questions.
